If you visit Nahacity, I recommend going to Shuri Castle. Shuri was once thecapital of the Ryukyu Kingdom. From the 15th to the 19thcentury, the kingdom was an independent territory that tradedwith Japan, China and Korea. Shuri Castle was the politicalbase and residence of the Ryukyu kings until 1879, whenOkinawa became part of Japan.Shuri Castle was first built in the late 1300s. Over the centuriesit was destroyed several times in fires and wars. The mostrecent reconstruction of the castle took place in 1992. Thebuildings are unique and beautiful. You can see influencesfrom China in the vivid red color and dragon patterns, andinfluences from Japan in the construction and roof style.As you approach the central buildings, you go through severalgates.
