His parents died when hewas young, so his grandparentsraised him and his siblings.When he was 22 years old, hestarted his first business, a textilecompany in Taiwan. The businesswent well. Later he was involvedin a variety of other businessventures in Osaka, Japan. But in1945, during World War II, all his factories and offices were burntdown by air attacks.After the war, there were food shortages in Japan and peopledid not have enough to eat. Ando became very conscious of theimportance of food. He noticed that people formed long lines atramen stalls. He thought, “Peace will come to the world when thereis enough food.”Ando was asked to become chiefdirector of a credit union. In 1957,the union went bankrupt, and he lostall his fortune at the age of 47. Buthe was not discouraged.
