There’s thefluency that you can measure ? that is to say how fast someone isspeaking, how many pauses, um, whether they fill the pauses, uh,and so on ? and that’s what we mean by“productive fluency”.But what’s interesting is that when you ask, uh, people who arenot specialists to judge fluency, uh, they don’t take those factorsinto account. Their perception of fluency is somehow related tothe confidence of the speaker. So if the speaker seems confident,they seem fluent, yeah?That is to say they don’t look worried, looking for words, uh, theyalso use gestures, they use their hands more, and these are someof the signs that people pick up ? and they’ll say,“Ah yes, thatspeaker’s very fluent,”but that speaker isn’t, even though the levelof English of that speaker is not as good.90 2015 AUGUST
